Welcome to Trezor Suite® — Your hardware wallet companion
This guide walks you through initial setup, security fundamentals, sending & receiving cryptocurrency, firmware updates, and practical tips to keep your funds safe. It assumes you have a Trezor hardware device and are installing Trezor Suite for the first time.
Quick overview
Trezor Suite is the desktop and web application that pairs with your Trezor hardware wallet to manage accounts, sign transactions offline, check portfolio balances, and interact with decentralized applications safely. The device keeps your private keys offline; the Suite provides a modern interface to interact with the blockchain.
What you'll need
- A genuine Trezor device (Model T or One) purchased from an authorized seller.
- A computer (Windows / macOS / Linux) or a compatible mobile device and a USB cable.
- Secure, private place to write your recovery seed.
- 15–30 minutes for the initial setup.
Before you begin — safety checklist
- Buy only from official or trusted retailers. Check tamper-evident packaging.
- Never enter your recovery seed on a computer or online. Write it down by hand on the provided card or a metal backup.
- Ensure your computer has up-to-date OS and antivirus, and avoid public or shared computers for setup.
Step-by-step setup (7 main steps)
Download Trezor Suite from the official source. Follow the installer for your platform. When opening for the first time, you'll be guided to connect your Trezor device and confirm the fingerprint shown on-screen on your device display.
Choose "Create new" to initialize a fresh wallet. The device will generate a recovery seed — a human-readable set of words. Write them down in order. Confirm the seed by entering selected words on the device when prompted.
Choose a strong PIN on the device. The PIN protects against physical access; if someone obtains your device without the PIN, they cannot access accounts. Use a memorable but non-obvious sequence; consider using a PIN manager (store only the hint, not the actual PIN).
Your recovery seed is the only way to restore funds if the device is lost, stolen, or damaged. Store it offline, ideally in multiple geographically separated, fireproof/waterproof backups. Consider a metal backup plate to resist fire and corrosion.
After creating a wallet, check for firmware updates within Suite. Firmware updates patch vulnerabilities and add features. Always verify the official release notes and apply updates through Suite; do not install random firmware files from unknown sources.
In Suite, add cryptocurrency accounts (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). Trezor supports many assets and tokens; use the account manager to track balances, create receive addresses, and view transaction history.
Always send a small amount first to ensure everything is working. Confirm the transaction details on the device screen (address and amount) before approving. This reduces risk from clipboard malware or address-rewriting threats on the host computer.
Security best practices
- Confirm all transaction details physically on your Trezor device screen — never rely solely on the host computer's display.
- Use a unique, high-entropy PIN and enable passphrase protection if you require plausible deniability or want multiple hidden wallets. Understand passphrase implications: losing it means losing access to funds if not backed up.
- Keep firmware and Suite updated. Subscribe to official channels for alerts from the vendor, and verify update signatures where available.
- Do not share your recovery seed or seed images. Beware social engineering and phishing attempts.
Using a passphrase (advanced)
A passphrase is an optional extra word or phrase appended to your seed to derive different wallets. It offers strong protection and plausible deniability but adds complexity: if you forget the passphrase, associated funds are unrecoverable. Use a secure method to store passphrases and consider hardware-backed storage.
Sending & receiving funds
To receive funds, create a new receive address from Suite and verify the address on your device display. For sending, create the transaction in Suite, and always verify the address, amount, and fee on the device before approving. Use transaction labels and memos in Suite to keep records for accounting and tax purposes.
Troubleshooting (common issues)
- Device not detected: Try a different USB cable/port and ensure Suite is updated. Disable conflicting browser extensions or other wallet software.
- Forgot PIN: If you forget your PIN, the only recovery path is to reset the device and restore using your recovery seed.
- Missing funds: Ensure you restored the correct seed with the correct derivation settings and passphrase. Check the blockchain explorer with your public address to verify transactions.
Advanced features
- Coinjoin & privacy tools: Suite may integrate privacy-enhancing features and recommend third-party partners. Understand trade-offs before using mixing services.
- Shamir backup: Advanced multi-piece seed backups (if supported by your device model) allow splitting the seed into multiple shares for distributed custody.
- Third-party integration: Trezor Suite can connect to dApps and DeFi protocols. When connecting, always review permissions and use read-only connections where possible.
Glossary (short)
- Seed / Recovery seed: The master list of words that can restore your wallet.
- Firmware: Software running on the device itself.
- Passphrase: Extra word/phrase combined with seed to create a hidden wallet.
- Transaction signing: The device cryptographically approves transactions without exposing private keys.
Checklist before you leave
- Recovery seed safely stored in multiple physical locations.
- PIN set and tested.
- Firmware and Suite updated.
- Test transaction completed successfully.
